The Autumn Equinox: An Invitation to Make Room for What Matters

There is something about the beginning of autumn that naturally invites us to pause.

The air begins to change. The days grow shorter. The trees slowly release the leaves they have been holding since spring. Nature begins turning inward, preparing for a quieter season.

And perhaps we are being invited to do the same.

The autumn equinox marks the moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator, creating nearly equal amounts of daylight and darkness. In the Northern Hemisphere, it signals the official beginning of fall and the gradual shift toward shorter days and longer nights.

For centuries, the equinox has also been recognized as a time of harvest, reflection, gratitude, and preparation. It is a natural turning point—a moment to appreciate what has grown, acknowledge what has changed, and decide what we want to carry with us into the next season.

Nature doesn’t hold on to every season, and neither do we have to.

A Natural Time to Consider Balance

Because the equinox is associated with nearly equal amounts of light and darkness, it has become a symbol of balance.

But balance doesn’t necessarily mean giving equal time and energy to every part of your life. That may not be possible—or even desirable.

There will be seasons when your family needs more of you. Times when your work requires extra attention. Moments when your health, healing, or emotional well-being needs to become the priority.

Balance is not about dividing yourself evenly between everything and everyone.

It is about noticing when one part of your life has been taking so much from you that something else important is no longer receiving enough.

Perhaps you have been spending so much time taking care of other people that you have stopped checking in with yourself.

Maybe you have been giving too much energy to worry, screens, responsibilities, or things you cannot control.

Perhaps your days have become so focused on doing that there hasn’t been much room for resting, enjoying, creating, connecting, or simply being present in your own life.

The equinox offers us a natural moment to pause and ask:

What have I been giving too much of my energy to lately? What could use a little more?

You may need less screen time and more time outside.

Less doing and more resting.

Less worrying and more enjoying.

Less rushing and more presence.

Less attention on what is missing and more appreciation for what is already here.

Making Room Often Begins With Letting Go

When the trees begin to release their leaves, we don’t see it as a failure. We understand that letting go is part of the natural cycle.

The tree is not giving up. It is conserving its energy, releasing what it no longer needs, and preparing for what comes next.

We don’t always give ourselves that same permission.

We hold on to old expectations, obligations, habits, beliefs, disappointments, and worries long after they have stopped serving us. Sometimes we continue giving our energy to something simply because we always have.

But letting go does not always require a dramatic ending or a complete life overhaul. It may simply mean deciding that something no longer deserves as much of your attention.

You might release the expectation that you have to do everything perfectly.

You might stop saying yes when your body and heart are telling you no.

You might step away from a habit that leaves you feeling depleted.

You might loosen your grip on something you cannot control.

You might decide to stop carrying a problem that was never yours to solve.

Sometimes feeling better begins by noticing what is taking up too much space inside us—and gently making room for something else.

What Matters in This Season of Your Life?

Every season has a different purpose.

Spring is a season of beginning and growth. Summer brings expansion, activity, and fullness. Autumn reminds us to gather what matters, appreciate what has grown, and release what we no longer need. Winter invites us to rest and restore.

Our lives have seasons too.

What mattered ten years ago may not be what matters most now. The way you once spent your time may no longer fit who you are becoming. Something that served you in one season may feel heavy or unnecessary in this one.

That doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice before. It simply means you are allowed to change.

This season may be asking you to slow down.

It may be asking you to take better care of yourself.

It may be asking you to create something, speak up, reconnect, simplify, or finally make room for something you have been putting off.

Instead of asking yourself what you should be doing, consider asking:

What truly matters to me in this season of my life?

Then notice whether the way you are spending your time, attention, and energy reflects your answer.

A Simple Equinox Reflection

Take a few quiet minutes with a journal or a piece of paper. Divide the page into three sections and complete these sentences:

I am ready to release…

What has been draining your energy, weighing on your mind, or taking up more space than it deserves?

I want to make more room for…

What would you like to experience more often? Rest? Joy? Creativity? Connection? Movement? Time outside? Peace?

What matters most to me in this season is…

Try not to answer based on what other people expect from you. Let your answer come from what feels true for you right now.

Then choose one small shift you can make this week.

You don’t have to change everything. Maybe you put your phone down and go outside for ten minutes. Perhaps you say no to one unnecessary obligation. You might go to bed earlier, call someone you love, return to something you enjoy, or give yourself permission to rest without earning it first.

Small choices show your mind and body what you are ready to prioritize.

An Invitation to Begin Again

The autumn equinox reminds us that change is not something separate from life. Change is life.

Nature does not resist the arrival of a new season. It adjusts. It releases. It responds to what is needed now.

We can do that too.

We can pause long enough to notice where our energy has been going. We can loosen our hold on what no longer belongs in this season. We can make more room for what supports us, restores us, and brings us back to ourselves.

As the season changes around you, allow it to become a gentle reminder:

You do not have to keep carrying everything.

You do not have to give your energy to everything.

And you are allowed to make room for what matters now.

With love & light,
Bonnie
