Why Nervous System Regulation Matters More Than You Think)

Years ago, when I had my first panic attack and ended up in the emergency room with a heart rate of over 220 beats per minute, I was convinced something was seriously wrong with me.

For months, I went through test after test looking for answers. Yet every doctor told me the same thing: physically, I was healthy.

At the time, I didn’t understand what was happening.

What I know now is that my body wasn’t broken. My nervous system was overwhelmed.

Looking back, I realize that many of the struggles I see in my clients—and many of the struggles I experienced myself—have less to do with willpower and more to do with nervous system regulation.

It’s a phrase you’ve probably heard more often in recent years, but many people still aren’t exactly sure what it means or why it matters.

The truth is, understanding your nervous system can change the way you think about stress, anxiety, overwhelm, and even personal growth.

What Is Nervous System Regulation?

Your nervous system is constantly gathering information from both your internal and external environment. Without you even realizing it, it is continually asking one simple question: Am I safe?

When your nervous system perceives safety, your body functions differently than when it perceives danger.

You think more clearly. You make better decisions. You feel more patient, creative, connected, and resilient.

But when your nervous system perceives threat—whether it’s a physical danger, a stressful situation, a difficult conversation, financial worries, health concerns, or simply too much pressure for too long—it shifts into protection mode.

This is where many of us spend far more time than we realize.

Signs Your Nervous System May Be Stuck in Survival Mode

You may find yourself:
• Overthinking everything
• Feeling anxious or on edge
• Becoming easily irritated
• Having trouble sleeping
• Feeling emotionally reactive
• Craving sugar or comfort foods
• Struggling to focus
• Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks
• Finding it difficult to make decisions

The important thing to understand is that these experiences aren’t character flaws.

They’re often signs that your nervous system is working hard to protect you.

The Two Modes Most People Live In

Most of us move back and forth between two basic states throughout the day.

The first is survival mode, which occurs when the nervous system perceives some form of threat.

The second is regulation mode, which occurs when the nervous system feels safe enough to relax, connect, and function optimally.

Survival Mode

When your nervous system perceives threat, you may experience:
• Anxiety
• Overthinking
• Irritability
• Emotional reactivity
• Trouble sleeping
• Cravings
• Feeling overwhelmed

These responses aren’t signs that something is wrong with you. They’re signs that your nervous system is trying to protect you.

Regulation Mode

When your nervous system feels safe, life often feels very different.

You may notice:
• Clear thinking
• Better decision-making
• Emotional resilience
• Creativity
• Patience
• A greater sense of connection with yourself and others

You still experience challenges, but you’re able to respond to them with more ease and flexibility. You feel less reactive and more resourceful.

This regulated state is where growth, healing, learning, and positive change happen most naturally.

The problem is that many of us try to solve these symptoms with more effort.
We push harder. We criticize ourselves. We try to think more positively. We tell ourselves to just get over it.

Yet when your nervous system feels unsafe, those strategies often don’t create lasting change.

Regulation Before Transformation

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the last twenty years is this:
Regulation before transformation.

Most people believe they need to change their circumstances in order to feel better.

They believe they’ll feel calm when the problem is solved. They’ll feel confident when they succeed. They’ll feel safe when life becomes more certain. But often the opposite is true.

When we help our nervous systems feel safer, we gain access to the very qualities that help us create positive change.

We think more clearly. We respond rather than react. We make better choices. We become more capable of handling life’s challenges.

Feeling better isn’t just the result of change. It’s often part of what creates change.

Three Simple Ways to Help Regulate Your Nervous System

The good news is that nervous system regulation doesn’t have to be complicated.

Small shifts can create powerful change.

Here are three of my favorite tools:

1. Breathe to Reset
One of the simplest ways to signal safety to your nervous system is through your breath.
Try inhaling for a count of five and exhaling for a count of ten.
The longer exhale helps activate your body’s natural relaxation response.
You don’t need to do it for long. Just a few rounds can help interrupt stress patterns and bring you back to the present moment.

2. Look Up
When we’re stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, our gaze naturally drops.
We look down at the floor, our phones, our problems, and our to-do lists.
Try gently lifting your eyes and looking up above the horizon. Notice what happens.
This simple shift can help interrupt stress patterns and encourage your brain and body to move toward a calmer state. It’s one of the fastest resets I know.

3. Tap & Breathe
Tapping has been one of my favorite tools for more than two decades because it’s simple, effective, and accessible almost anywhere.
My favorite version quick version is what I call Tap & Breathe.
As you slowly breathe, gently tap through a series of acupressure points on your face and upper body.
The combination of rhythmic tapping and intentional breathing helps calm the nervous system while bringing your attention back to the present moment.
Many people notice they feel more relaxed, grounded, and emotionally balanced in just a few minutes. (watch me guide you through Tap & Breathe)

Small Shifts Create Powerful Change

One of the biggest misconceptions about wellbeing is that transformation requires dramatic action.

In reality, lasting change is often built through small moments repeated consistently.

A few conscious breaths. A simple shift in where you’re looking. A few minutes of tapping.

These tiny actions may seem insignificant, but they send an important message to your nervous system: You are safe.

And when your nervous system begins to feel safer, everything becomes easier.

A Final Thought

If you’ve been feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck, you may not need more information.

You may simply need more moments of regulation. Small moments of breathing. Small moments of awareness. Small moments of returning to yourself.

Because when your nervous system begins to settle, you gain access to the wisdom, resilience, and inner resources that have been there all along.

And that can change everything!

With love,
Bonnie
