You Get to Choose How You See Today

What was the very first thing you did this morning?

Did you reach for your phone? Did you open your email? Did you read a text that made your nervous system clench before you had even gotten out of bed?

No judgment. I have done all of it. But the way you start your day matters more than most people realize.

When you first wake up, your mind has not yet been pulled in a dozen different directions. It is a little like freshly turned soil. Whatever you plant there first has a better chance of taking root.

If the first thing you do is scroll, you are immediately pulling your brain into a cycle of quick stimulation and giving your attention away before you have had a chance to become fully present.

If you start with the news, emails or other people’s urgency, you are teaching your nervous system that the day belongs to everyone else before it belongs to you.

That is how so many of us wake up already in reaction mode. Before our feet have even touched the floor, we are responding to the world instead of consciously deciding how we want to meet it.

But we can choose something different.

We can begin with a few deep breaths. A prayer. A sentence in a journal. Five minutes of silence. A moment to decide what kind of energy we want to bring to the day before the day begins asking things from us.

You do not need an elaborate morning routine to change the way you experience your life. You simply need one intentional moment that says:

I am here. I am grateful to be here. I am choosing myself and my perception first.

That is a very different way to begin.

Your First Thoughts Help Set the Tone

Beginning the day intentionally does not guarantee that everything will go the way you want it to. It does not prevent difficult conversations, unexpected problems or other people from being in a bad mood.

What it does is remind you that you have a choice in how you meet those things.

You may not be able to choose everything that happens today, but you can choose what you focus on. You can choose the meaning you give something. You can choose whether one frustrating moment becomes the story of your entire day.

Your perception influences how you feel, and how you feel influences how you respond. When you begin the morning by remembering that you have some choice in the way you see your life, you are less likely to hand that power over to your inbox, the news, social media or someone else’s mood.

This is where the simple phrase “I get to” can create such a powerful shift.

“I have to get up” becomes “I get to wake up to another day.”

“I have to go to work” becomes “I get to use my abilities and support myself.”

“I have to take care of everyone” becomes “I get to love and care for the people who matter to me.”

It does not mean that everything is easy or that you have to feel grateful for every responsibility. It simply helps you remember that there may be another way to see what is in front of you.

Sometimes changing two words is enough to change the energy you bring to the moment.

Try This: The “I Get To” Morning Shift

Tomorrow morning, before you reach for your phone or allow the outside world to have your attention, pause.

Place one hand over your heart and take three slow, deep breaths. Let yourself feel the bed beneath you, notice the room around you and become present in your body.

Then say:

“Thank you! I get to be alive today. I get another day on this earth. I get to choose how I perceive things. I get to choose what I focus on and the energy I bring into this day.”

You can also add my favorite morning reminder:

“Today, I get to be alive, and this will be the best day of my life so far!”

Do not rush through the words. Let yourself take them in.

Then ask yourself:

How do I want to see this day?

What do I want to notice?

How do I want to feel as I move through it?

Choose one word to guide you. It might be peaceful, open, grateful, playful, present, patient or curious.

Write it down or say it aloud. Then return to it whenever you notice yourself slipping into reaction mode.

You are not trying to control the entire day. You are simply choosing how you want to enter it.

What If You Practiced This for Seven Days?

One intentional morning can change the tone of your day. Practicing this shift consistently can begin to change the way you experience your life.

That is why I created the free 7-Day I Get to Shift Challenge.

For seven days, we will explore simple ways to shift from obligation to appreciation, from automatic reactions to intentional choices and from merely moving through the day to recognizing the life that is happening right now.

You do not need more pressure, another complicated routine or one more thing you “have to” do. This is an invitation to pause, reset your perspective and remember that every new day gives you another opportunity to choose.

If you are ready to stop beginning your days with everyone else’s energy and start choosing your own, I would love to have you join us.

Your day will not always unfold exactly as you hoped. But before the world gets your attention, you can take one quiet moment to remember:

I am here.

I get to be alive today.

And I get to choose how I see this day.

With love,
Bonnie
