Spread Some Loving Kindness

“The kindness you offer yourself becomes the kindness you carry into the world.”

One of my favorite daily practices doesn’t require a meditation cushion, a quiet room, or even a few minutes alone.

In fact, I usually practice it standing in line at the grocery store, walking through a parking lot, or waiting for an appointment.

No one around me knows I’m doing it. Yet something interesting almost always happens.

People smile at me. Sometimes they make eye contact. Sometimes they strike up a conversation. Other times there’s simply a warmth that seems to appear out of nowhere. I can’t prove that my silent practice causes those moments, but after years of doing this, I’ve noticed it too often to dismiss.

This simple exercise, Spread Some Loving Kindness, originally appeared as Day 28 of my book, The Appreciation Game, which I wrote in 2020.

Of all the practices in the book, this is still one I return to again and again. Sometimes the simplest ideas become the ones that stay with us.”

This simple exercise, Spread Some Loving Kindness, originally appeared as Day 28 of my first book, The Appreciation Game, and it remains one of my favorite daily practices. It’s funny how some of the simplest ideas become the ones that stay with us for a lifetime.

It Starts With You

Most of us find it much easier to be compassionate toward other people than we are toward ourselves.

We forgive a friend’s mistakes. We encourage someone who’s struggling. We remind people we love that they’re doing the best they can.

Then we turn around and criticize ourselves for the very same things.

But kindness isn’t something we simply give away. It’s something we experience first.

When we begin speaking to ourselves with gentleness instead of judgment, we create emotional safety within our own nervous system. Our bodies begin to soften. Our minds become quieter. We naturally become more patient, more understanding, and more compassionate with everyone around us.

The love we offer ourselves becomes the love we carry into the world.

Spread Some Loving Kindness

Take a slow, comfortable breath. If it feels comforting, place your hand over your heart and quietly repeat:

• May I be safe.
• May I be happy.
• May I be healthy.
• May I live with ease.

Pause for a moment and simply notice how those words feel.

Next, picture someone you love and offer them those same wishes.

Then think of someone you don’t know well.

Finally, if you’re out in the world today, let every person you see become part of your quiet meditation.

As someone walks past you in the grocery store…

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May you live with ease.

The person driving beside you.
The cashier.
The young mother with tired eyes.
The elderly man walking slowly across the parking lot.
The teenager who’s pretending everything is okay.

You never know what someone else is carrying.

This simple practice gently reminds us that we’re all human and we’re all walking through life together.

We Are More Connected Than We Realize

Science is continuing to reveal something that many spiritual traditions have taught for centuries: we are far more connected than we often realize.

Our nervous systems are constantly communicating with one another. Researchers call this co-regulation. A calm, grounded person can help another person feel calmer simply through their presence.

We’ve all experienced it. You can walk into a room and immediately sense tension—or feel yourself relax in the company of someone who radiates peace.

Even quantum physics reminds us that beneath what appears solid, everything is made of energy. Every cell in your body, every heartbeat, every thought, every emotion is part of an incredibly dynamic energetic system. While scientists are still uncovering exactly how consciousness and connection fit into that picture, one thing seems increasingly clear: we influence one another in ways we don’t fully understand.

Perhaps that’s why a simple practice like silently wishing someone well doesn’t just change us—it may subtly change the space between us.
When we silently offer kindness to another person, we’re changing our own energy first. And I can’t help but wonder if that shift ripples outward in ways we’ll never fully measure.

Whatever the reason, it’s one of the simplest and most beautiful practices I’ve ever discovered.

The Beautiful Surprise

What’s fascinating is that this practice doesn’t just benefit the people around you. It changes you.

As I silently wish strangers well, I notice my own shoulders relax. I become less impatient. Less distracted. More present. More grateful. It’s almost impossible to hold genuine goodwill toward another person while remaining caught up in irritation or judgment.

The practice softens something inside. And maybe that’s the greatest gift of all.

Today’s Invitation

The next time you’re waiting in line, sitting in traffic, walking through a crowd, or simply passing someone on the sidewalk, try this quiet experiment.
Without saying a word, silently offer each person you see these simple wishes:

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May you live with ease.

No one else has to know. There is nothing to prove. Simply notice what happens—not only around you, but within you.

Because sometimes the greatest transformation isn’t changing the world around us. It’s changing the way we move through it.

I’d love to hear from you. If you try this practice over the next week, send me a message and let me know what you notice. My guess is you’ll discover, just as I have, that when we quietly send kindness into the world, our own hearts become lighter too.

Sending you lots of loving kindness,
Bonnie
