“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust
A few weeks ago, I wrote about something that has become one of my favorite reminders: What you look for, you begin to see. What you focus on, you begin to feel.
I’ve been thinking about those words a lot lately.
This week inside our Daily Reset community, we’re doing something I’ve never done before. We’re calling it The Wonder Hunt.
It’s simple. We’re intentionally looking for moments of wonder throughout our day and sharing them with one another.
At first glance, it might sound a little silly. After all, we’re adults. We have responsibilities, deadlines, bills to pay, people to care for, and problems to solve. Who’s got time to go looking for butterflies?
But maybe that’s exactly why we need to.
Somewhere along the way, many of us stopped noticing the extraordinary beauty hidden inside ordinary moments. Children haven’t forgotten. They’ll stop everything to watch a caterpillar crossing the sidewalk. They’ll spend ten minutes fascinated by a dandelion floating through the air. They’ll laugh at cloud shapes or stare in amazement at a rainbow. They aren’t looking for something spectacular. They’re simply paying attention.
I think that’s one of the greatest gifts of childhood and one of the greatest losses of adulthood.
When we’re constantly focused on our worries, our brains become incredibly good at finding more things to worry about. That’s how the brain is designed. It notices whatever we’ve taught it is important. If we’re always scanning for problems, we’ll find them. If we’re always looking for what’s wrong, we’ll find plenty of evidence.
But something beautiful begins to happen when we intentionally look for wonder instead. We begin noticing beauty that was always there. The sunlight filtering through the trees. A dragonfly hovering over the lake. A hummingbird visiting the feeder. The smell of fresh-cut grass. The sound of rain on the roof. The warmth of a coffee mug in our hands. None of those things changed. We did.
I’ve written a lot lately about nervous system regulation because I truly believe it changes everything. Here’s something fascinating: when we experience genuine awe or wonder, our nervous system naturally shifts. Our breathing slows, our shoulders soften, and our attention moves away from anxious thoughts and into the present moment.
For just a little while, we’re no longer rehearsing tomorrow’s problems or replaying yesterday’s disappointments. We’re simply here. And that’s where peace lives. Not in having a perfect life, but in fully experiencing the one we’re living.
One of the things I love most about living where I do is how often nature reminds me to slow down. Some mornings it’s the fog hanging low over the fields. Other days it’s sunlight pouring through the pine trees behind our house. Sometimes it’s a tiny mushroom growing beside the trail or a spiderweb covered in morning dew that looks like it was strung with diamonds.
None of those moments ask anything of me. They simply invite me to notice. And every time I do, I feel just a little lighter, a little calmer, and a little more grateful to be here.
This week, I’d love for you to become a Wonder Seeker too. As you go through your day, look for something that makes you pause. It doesn’t have to be dramatic. In fact, the quieter the moment, the better. It might be a flower blooming where you didn’t expect it, a butterfly, a beautiful sky, a child’s laughter, your dog sleeping in a patch of sunshine, or simply the first sip of your morning coffee.
When you begin looking for wonder, you’ll discover something surprising. It has been quietly waiting for you all along.
I’d also love to invite you to join us inside my free Facebook community for this week’s Wonder Hunt. Throughout the week, we’re sharing the little moments that make us stop, smile, and remember how beautiful ordinary life can be. People are posting photos of flowers, birds, sunsets, gardens, favorite walking paths, butterflies, hummingbirds, and all the everyday treasures they might have missed if they hadn’t slowed down long enough to notice.
I’d love for you to join us. You don’t need a perfect camera or an extraordinary adventure. Just bring your curiosity. Together, let’s fill the week with reminders that this world is still full of magic for those who choose to look.
Because wonder isn’t something you stumble across once in a while. It’s something you discover every day when you begin paying attention.
Wishing you an abundance of wonder,
Bonnie
