We all know how it feels to walk into a situation with dread, already bracing for the worst—and then, not surprisingly, things go sideways. But what if the opposite were also true? What if your expectations actually shape the experiences you have?
Spoiler alert: They do.
In this post, we’ll explore the power of expectation, how it colors your reality, and how to start using it intentionally to create more positive outcomes. You’ll even try a simple exercise to shift your expectations and watch what happens.
What Does It Mean to Expect?
The word expect is defined as: to regard something as likely to happen.
Your expectations are like mental previews. They quietly broadcast your beliefs about what’s coming next. And they influence your mood, your actions, your energy—and ultimately, your outcomes.
You get what you expect, whether you want it or not.
Think about it:
Whether you realize it or not, you are constantly broadcasting expectations—and life is responding in kind.
The World Is Your Mirror
Albert Einstein famously said, “The most important question you can ever ask is: Is the world a friendly place?”
He believed your answer to that question would shape everything—your mindset, your behavior, your reactions, and your experience of life itself.
If you believe the world is a friendly place, you expect kindness, connection, support. You interpret neutral events more positively. You notice opportunities. You smile first. And more often than not, the world smiles back.
If you believe the world is unfriendly, you expect trouble. You scan for threats. You close off. And you often get back exactly what you were anticipating.
Your expectations filter your reality. That’s why changing what you expect can change what you experience.
A Tale of Two Dogs
Here’s a Japanese folktale that illustrates this beautifully:
Long ago in a small village, there was a place called the House of 1000 Mirrors.
A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced happily up the stairs and looked through the doorway, tail wagging.
To his great surprise, he saw 1000 other happy little dogs wagging their tails and smiling at him. He left thinking, “What a wonderful place! I’ll come back often.”
In the same village, another little dog, not so cheerful, also visited. He climbed the stairs slowly and looked in with a low-hanging head and a growl.
Inside, he saw 1000 unfriendly dogs growling back at him. He left thinking, “That place is horrible. I’m never going back.”
What changed? Not the house. Just the expectation.
This story is a beautiful reminder: the energy you bring is the energy you get back.
What Are You Expecting?
Most of us are taught to be cautious, to “be realistic,” or to prepare for disappointment. As children, we often had to justify our needs and wants by focusing on what wasn’t working or what we were lacking.
This early conditioning can lead us to expect problems instead of blessings, to imagine worst-case scenarios instead of best outcomes.
But here’s the truth:
Your mood is your magnet, and your expectations are the blueprint.
A Simple Exercise: Expectation Experiment
Want to see this in action? Try this short experiment today.
Step 1: Choose a New Expectation
Pick one situation you’ll be walking into today—a conversation, a chore, a commute, a work task. Then set a conscious expectation like:
Step 2: Carry the Energy
As you move into the situation, bring that expectation with you like a quiet internal smile. Breathe it in. Embody it.
Step 3: Reflect
Afterward, take a moment to journal or reflect: What happened? How did your mood and energy shift the experience?
The more you do this, the more you’ll realize your expectations are a powerful self-fulfilling prophecy.
Start Expecting More
You don’t have to fake positivity or deny challenges. You just need to start looking for what you want to see.
Your expectations are not naive. They are creative.
What you look for, you find.
What you expect, you experience.
So ask yourself:
What am I expecting right now?
And if you don’t like the answer, change it.
Because your next moment is forming itself around your expectation.
With positive expectation for a lovely day today!

Ready to change your perspective and feel lighter, happier, and more empowered in just 7 days?
What if three simple words could change how you feel… and how you live? “I GET TO…”
I Get To Shift! – 7 Day Challenge
A gift to help you kick off summer in a higher vibe.
Every day for 7 days, you’ll learn how to shift from “I have to” ➝ “I get to”
…and watch how your mood, energy, and outlook on life transform.
You’ll get:
Science shows that just 7 days of consistent practice can actually begin to rewire your brain.
How? It all comes down to neuroplasticity—your brain’s incredible ability to change and adapt. Every time you choose a new thought, reaction, or way of seeing something, you’re creating new neural pathways. And when you do that over several days, those pathways strengthen—making it easier to think differently, feel better, and act with more intention.
This challenge is based on the most-loved concept from my book The Appreciation Game: A 30-Day Process to Increase Happiness, Satisfaction & Well-Being. Day Nine – I Get To… This process is the one so many people told me was their favorite and even life-changing. And this 7-Day Challenge is also a sneak peek into my next book, which is all about how shifting your perception changes your life.
I hope you’ll join in this fun experiment in changing perspective & building good feeling momentum!
You get to feel good!
You get to choose your perspective!
You get to start now!
